2. EBT Chip Cards Are Coming. Help Merchants Get Ready.
The move toward more secure SNAP EBT payments is underway.
Traditional magnetic-stripe EBT cards are vulnerable to skimming, card cloning, and data theft. As fraud continues to affect SNAP recipients and retailers, states are beginning to transition to more
secure chip-enabled EBT cards.
Virginia begins its EBT chip card rollout in September, while New York has set a target date of December 1, 2026.
As more states make the transition, retailers will need point-of-sale technology capable of supporting EBT chip card transactions.
