Weight Item Barcode Reading lets DejaPay Pro automatically recognize special barcodes printed by scales for items sold by weight or by price, and calculate the correct quantity and price when the barcode is scanned. This removes the need for cashiers to enter the weight or price manually, speeding up checkout and reducing entry errors.

Basics

A weight/price item barcode is made up of four parts, for example 2 33333 55555 0:

  • Prefix — the first digit of the barcode. A value of 2 identifies it as a weight/price item barcode; any other prefix is treated as a regular barcode and looked up as usual

  • PLU code — the next 5 digits. This is matched against the barcode configured on the inventory item

  • Value — the next 5 digits. Depending on the configured mode (see Configure below), this is read as either the item's weight or its price

  • Check digit — the last digit (usually "0"). It is a control digit used by the barcode scanner and is not used by the register

Configure

The feature is controlled by POS settings applied to the whole location. If it is turned off, all barcodes — including scale-generated ones — are treated as regular barcodes

  • Smart scale barcode mode — controls how the register interprets the value portion of a weight/price barcode:

    • Off — the feature is disabled; the register looks up an item using the full scanned barcode only

    • Weight — the value portion of the barcode is read as the item's weight

    • Price — the value portion of the barcode is read as the item's price

  • Weight decimal precision — used only when the mode is set to Weight. It determines how many digits of the value are treated as the decimal part of the weight. For example, with a precision of 3, a scanned value of 01234 is read as a weight of 1.234

How it works

When a cashier scans an item at checkout, the register handles the barcode as follows:

  1. Checks the barcode's prefix

    1. If the prefix is 2, it continues to the next step

    2. Otherwise, the register looks up the item using the full barcode as usual, and the steps below do not apply

  2. Searches the inventory for an item with barcode that matches the 5-digit PLU code

    1. If a matching item is found, the register continues to the next step

    2. If no item is found, the register searches again using the full scanned barcode.

    3. If an item is still not found, the cashier is prompted to create a new item, with the full scanned barcode pre-filled into the barcode field

  3. Applies the location's smart scale barcode mode:

    1. Weight — the value portion of the barcode is read as the item's weight (using the configured weight decimal precision). The line item's quantity is set to that weight, and its price is calculated as the inventory item's unit price multiplied by that quantity.

    2. Price — the value portion of the barcode is read as the item's total price (the last two digits are always the cents). The line item's price is set to that value, and its quantity is calculated by dividing that price by the inventory item's unit price.

  4. The item is added to the order with the calculated quantity and price.

Example

An inventory item has the PLU "33333". The smart scale barcode mode is set to "Weight". The cashier scans the barcode "233333555550":

The item with PLU "33333" is added to the cart with a quantity of 55.555 and an automatically calculated price:

Important notes

  • When the smart scale barcode mode is set to Off, weight/price barcodes are treated the same as any other barcode — the register does not calculate weight or price from them.

  • If the barcode does not use the prefix "2", or no inventory item matches the PLU code, the register falls back to a regular barcode search using the whole barcode.

  • If neither the 5-digit PLU code nor the full barcode matches an item, the register suggests creating a new item with the full barcode filled into the barcode field.

  • If items are not scanning correctly, first verify that the barcode on the inventory item matches the 5-digit PLU code from the scale label.
